Voie Lactée: Grand Piano in a More Fashionable Style
Saturday, August 30th, 2008 |Tags: Andrée Putman, France, piano, Pleyel, Voie Lactée

Grand old pianos in dusty may not fit into the decor of the homes of today. Intended for music lovers who wish to stick to a more contemporary style, Andrée Putman partners with France’s oldest piano maker, Pleyel, to create a more modern version of something that had, at one time, been a necessity at every home that could boast of elegance. The mod piano, titled Voie Lactée, is a smaller version of the grand piano in shining black lacquer.
The chrome baby grand piano has a music grand made from mother of pearl and styled in checkerboard black and white; the underside of the piano lid resembles the night sky in star-studded blue. Putman and Pleyel intend to release two versions of the piano: a limited edition of only eight and an unlimited version for the masses. The special features of the limited version are not known yet, but it would be hard to get your hands on one of the eight.

EDF Archives Center: Eco-Friendly Building
Sunday, August 24th, 2008 |Tags: Eco-Friendly Building, EDF Archives Center, France, hot air pumps, LAN architecture, photovoltaic panels, waste water treatment system

The best thing about glass buildings is that they reflect the natural beauty of the world outside it. But how interesting can that be when these reflections only show us more high-rise buildings? We can exactly reconstruct the adjacent building to make it look like a forest, can we? The EDF archives centre has an exterior made of patterned mirror that seems to reflect natures best. The building stands on almost barren land and yet seems to be host to greenery. Designed by LAN Architecture, France, the EDF archives centre stands as an appeal to everyone to care about the environment that we are parasites to.
The five storey building of the EDF archive centre is insulated by double concrete. It includes a waste water treatment system for the regular supply of fresh water since the building sits so far away from any links to civilisation. The building does not just have a facade of eco-friendliness, but the incorporations in the building itself make it eco-friendly. Take into consideration the photovoltaic panels and the hot air pumps that generate energy within the building, making it self-sufficient. Hopefully, many more architectural firms would be inspired by these ‘reflections of nature’.

Worknest Chair: Winner of Red Dot Award 2008
Sunday, August 10th, 2008 |Tags: Chair, Erwan Bouroullec, France, Germany, red dot award, Ronan Bouroullec, Vitra AG, Worknest

As the name suggests, the Worknest chair is an attempt to import ‘homelike’ qualities into the chair used at an office set up. Designed by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the swivel chair endeavours to facade the functionality while instead stressing on the simple beauty of it. Seat and arm rests are upholstered in a soft material of pleasing colours. User can change the height of the chair and even that of the arm rests separately according to his/her individual desires, while in the comfort of a seated position. If you’re looking out for something soothing for both your back and on your eyes, this would be the perfect choice, even with a slightly raised price.
Working overtime for hours at the office can have you dreaming of going home to settle in your favourite and comfortable old armchair and resting your aching back against a plush cushion. Nowadays, work environments are made as comfortable as possible for the pleasures of the employees, perhaps from fear of early retirement by employees. The Worknest chair is manufactured by Vitra AG, Birsfelden, Germany, with the intension of granting the user all the desired comforts, is the winner of the Red Dot Award for the best product design, 2008.
